Abstract

The German shipping industry continues to find itself in difficult waters. Many of the cautious hopes that emerged last year as a result of the excellent overall economic situation look set to be disappointed in the face of international conflicts and the global economic slowdown: Whereas in 2018 nearly three-quarters of German shipping companies were projecting growth, this proportion has since shrunk to only a good half. By contrast, four out of ten assume that conditions will remain flat. Even so, a good two out of three shipping companies expect cargo volumes to rise again in the next five years.
