Abstract

Energy policy has been an important aspect of European integration since the creation of the Coal and Steel Community in 1951. In the 1990’s there was significant liberalisation and integration of the EU’s energy markets since the 1990’s and today the UK and EU27 markets are closely connected. Operators engage in joint projects in the North Sea, and real-time trade in power and gas across the English Channel is significant. As interconnectivity continues to increase cooperation between the EU27 and the UK becomes vital in any Brexit scenario.
